Majorca-Ibiza Link
Majorca-Ibiza Link
The union of the two Balearic sub-systems.
A fundamental step forward for the islands
The electricity link between Majorca and Ibiza is a key step forward from the viewpoint of guaranteeing supply and structuring the region by linking the two existing electricity subsystems in the Balearic Islands and connecting them to the Iberian and European electricity systems.
This infrastructure enables Red Eléctrica to end the electrical 'isolation' of Ibiza and Formentera, which means a fundamental boost to the quality and security of supply on both islands.

The project includes a 3 km land section in Majorca to the Santa Ponça substation, and a 5 km section in Ibiza, to the Torrent substation. The route has been designed in such a way that on leaving Majorca it runs parallel to the previous link with the mainland, and on its arrival in Ibiza, one of the two circuits shares the route with the Ibiza-Formentera 132 kV link, thus reducing the impact of the route on the region.
Maximum commitment to the seabed
The commitment to deploy the infrastructure with the minimum impact on marine ecosystems led Red Eléctrica to design the interconnection route through areas with little vegetation and, where appropriate, where there was less coverage of posidonia meadows, a plant species protected throughout Europe for its high ecological value. To do this, it not only carried out the special burying of the cables and their protection system to conserve the existing meadows, but also initiated a restoration, research and dissemination project that has been awarded internationally and with Mallorca it has recovered two hectares of posidonia.
