Discover what Red Eléctrica is, what we do, and why we are the backbone of the electricity system in Spain and the ecological transition.
Electricity transmission
Electricity transmission
We are responsible for the development, maintenance, and renewal of the electricity transmission grid to make electricity safely accessible to the entire community.
We are the transmission company for the national electricity system
We connect generation centres with consumption points through a robust grid that transmits electricity at high voltage. Furthermore, we design, build, and maintain this grid to ensure its availability and reliability and to prepare it for connecting new generation sources. Thus, we are the cornerstone of a secure, high-quality, and increasingly sustainable power supply.

Learn more about the transmission grid that covers Spain. It is made up of facilities that form a meshed system that provides electricity to the entire community with quality and security.
We manage the grid sustainably
We manage the grid sustainably
We develop infrastructure sustainably. Likewise, we are in permanent contact with the communities to protect their ecosystems, natural capital, and lifestyles with quality and security.

Featured facilities
Since 1985, we have been developing cutting-edge infrastructure. Indeed, many of them are pioneers at the international level. We face technical and technological challenges to ensure the transmission grid meets the needs of Spanish society.
Spain-France underground electricity interconnection
A pioneering, complex, and exceptional project that crosses the Pyrenees through an 8.5-kilometre tunnel that doubled the electricity exchange capacity with France.
First Peninsula-Balearic link
This is a milestone for its singularity and technical complexity. Today, it connects the Balearic system with the one on the mainland, strengthening supply security and advancing the decarbonisation of the island.
Tenerife-La Gomera link
The future link, which we are developing, will be a turning point for the ecological transition of the Canary Islands. On the one hand, it provides the capacity to cover the island of La Gomera's total demand, and allows the integration of a new renewable quota from La Gomera into the Tenerife system.
Lanzarote-Fuerteventura link
A link that decisively improves the security and quality of the supply of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and facilitates their progress in the energy transition. Its commissioning has demonstrated the need to continue advancing in these essential infrastructures for the Canary electricity system.
New Ibiza-Formentera link
This submarine interconnection covers total peak demand of the island of Formentera, reducing to the maximum its dependence on fossil fuels and making progress in the practical decarbonisation of electricity generation on the island.
Majorca-Ibiza link
This link enabled the union of the two existing electricity systems in the Balearic Islands, connecting them to the Iberian and European electricity markets through the connection with the mainland. The twin link posed a technological challenge as it was the longest and deepest AC link in the world when it was constructed.
Majorca-Menorca link
Commissioned in 2020, it integrated the entire Balearic archipelago into a single interconnected electricity system. The submarine cable plays a substantial role in the energy transition process proposed for Menorca and the Balearic Islands as a whole.
Barajas, the first underground line
We present the first 400 kV underground line, an internationally recognised project.
