A link for the unification of the Balearic system
Its commissioning in 2020 successfully completes the Balearic Islands' electricity link and connects the entire archipelago with the Spanish mainland and the European grid. The commissioning of this link is an essential contribution to enhancing the security, stability and quality of Menorca's electricity supply.
This interconnection plays a key role in the energy transition of Menorca and all the Balearic Islands by facilitating greater efficiency in the management of the island's electricity system, maximising the integration of energy sources, maximising the integration of current and future renewable energies under safe conditions and reducing CO2 emissions.
So it is a giant step in the ecological transition of the island and the region, with an increasingly efficient system that generates benefits that are passed on to citizens.

The link consists of a three-pole 132 kV submarine cable and connects the substations of Ciudadela and Cala Mesquida, in Menorca and Majorca, respectively.
The underwater route is 41.7 km long, with a maximum depth of 86 metres, and the land route is 12.5 km long in Menorca and 742 metres long in Majorca. The land sections of the link are underground on both islands.
Maximum environmental and coastal protection
Red Eléctrica has designed and executed this project with maximum safety and environmental protection in mind.
That is why at both ends, the link to the coast is reached by means of directional horizontal drilling, an underground pipeline that avoids any impact on the coast and its biodiversity, especially by safeguarding the Phanerogam and Posidonia meadows at both ends of the coast.
In the case of Cala'n Bosch, the directional horizontal drilling has a total length of 310 metres with a maximum depth of 25 metres, while in the case of Cala Mesquida, it has a length of 800 metres, with a maximum depth of 20 metres underwater and a maximum depth of 276 metres under the beach.
In addition, as there are no overhead lines, it avoids impact on birdlife.
