Sustainability
Sustainability
We develop and maintain the grid with the utmost respect and in conversation with the different regions to contribute to their sustainable development.
For a sustainable country
We design, deploy, and manage the transmission grid sustainably and based on input from the communities to ensure that it fosters fair, inclusive and sustainable regional development, particularly in rural areas. We integrate infrastructures into their surroundings, protect the environment, and create value and life opportunities for local residents.
We apply environmental criteria beyond what is required by law: we make it a priority to listen to the people in the area and analyse all environmental, cultural, and social parameters in order to choose the best location and route for our lines and sub-stations. Moreover, we add cultural value through our care and respect for the heritage we encounter during our projects, from dinosaur footprints to invaluable archaeological sites.
A healthy environment benefits everyone. We are committed to making a positive impact on biodiversity in the areas around our facilities.
We therefore have several programmes in place to protect species and habitats, particularly birdlife, and we implement stringent measures and seek innovative solutions to prevent forest fires.
Additionally, we measure and reduce our emissions to fight climate change, promoting this commitment among our suppliers as well.
Our contribution to society goes well beyond ensuring electrical supply. We aim to improve the lives of those living in the areas our infrastructure runs through.
That's why we finance and support shared-value initiatives that act as catalysts for social transformation, always in conversation with local residents and in collaboration with their administrations and social organisations.

Affordable and clean energy
Red Eléctrica actively participates in the transition towards a new, more competitive and sustainable energy model. As a key player, it ensures that aspects such as the development of the transmission grid, interconnections, efficient integration of renewable energies, and electricity demand response are successfully implemented in the Spanish electricity system.
Decent work and economic growth
As a Spanish IBEX 35 company, and particularly as the transmission grid operator for the Spanish electricity system, Red Eléctrica's activities contribute to the country's economic growth by generating quality jobs and creating employment, while adding shared value to the economic, environmental, and social progress in the areas where the company operates.
Industry, innovation and infrastructure
Red Eléctrica contributes to building reliable, sustainable, resilient, and quality infrastructure, with the aim of maximising its integration into the environment and ensuring their comprehensive security. Furthermore, the company is developing a digital transformation strategy that will represent significant progress in the digitalisation of its activities and services.
Climate action
Since 2011, Red Eléctrica has demonstrated its voluntary commitment to fighting climate change by defining and approving its climate change strategy and establishing an action plan in this area. The company is also a key player in the transition towards the new energy model required to fight climate change.
Life below water
Red Eléctrica impacts marine ecosystems where submarine interconnection facilities are built. To minimise this impact, the company has established criteria for the preservation and protection of marine ecosystems when building interconnections, and it develops projects to restore posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows.
Life on land
The main environmental impacts of Red Eléctrica's activities stem from the presence of our facilities in the region. Therefore, the company is working hard to fully integrate these facilities into the environments and areas where it operates, considering their entire life cycle and paying special attention to biodiversity conservation.
