The new 220 kV electricity sub-station at Piélagos is one of the main investments, and is intended to service the “Llano de la Pasiega” strategic initiative.
The president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, met with the chairwoman of Redeia - Red Eléctrica’s parent company -, Beatriz Corredor, to learn first-hand about how the investments that Red Eléctrica are making in Cantabria are progressing. These are a group of projects that are intended to improve Cantabria's electricity system, to guarantee supply quality and security and stimulate the economy, enabling the industrial and social development of the autonomous community and facilitating job creation.
Among other initiatives, listed in the Plan for 2021-2026 approved by the Spanish government, there are those aimed at enabling industrial development as a driving force for the economy. The investments are also intended to integrate new renewable energies to advance towards the goal of achieving ecological transition.
One major project is the creation of the 220 kV electricity sub-station at Piélagos, approved as part of the plan modification carried out by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge in April of this year.
It is a new and essential infrastructure, on the one hand because of the demand associated with the new productive uses, including logistics, as well as industrial and entrepreneurial activities, and on the other due to the need for a railway terminal to enable intermodal goods transportation with a connection to the Port of Santander.
The new electricity sub-station will be added to the existing line between Penagos and Puente de San Miguel.
It will be accompanied by the renovation of several electricity sub-stations to increase the capacity for integrating renewables, making progress in terms of the ecological transition and meeting the targets set for energy and the climate.
This is the case for the Mataporquera electricity sub-station renovation, which is needed for the transmission of the anticipated renewable energies in the south of Cantabria and essential for the electricity supply in the industrial zone of Reinosa.
Similarly, the renovation and expansion of the Aguayo sub-station will allow renewable hydraulic and wind energies to be integrated into the transmission grid in the central zone.
