Red Eléctrica, Redeia's company responsible for the operation and transmission of the national electricity system, has expanded the Espartal 220 kV sub-station in El Burgo de Ebro (Zaragoza). This project is essential to enable new industrial developments and improve the current power supply in an area with significant economic activity. 

The expansion of the Espartal sub-station addresses the needs of large-scale industrial and technological consumers interested in establishing operations nearby. These consumers will benefit from Aragon’s substantial wind and photovoltaic energy development, which makes the region’s generation mix highly renewable.

Over the past year, work on the sub-station has included reconfiguring the facility to a double-busbar system, which provides greater supply security and reliability. Additionally, two new bays have been added, enabling the input of a new consumer. 

The project was carried out in constant coordination with other consumers connected to the sub-station, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and industrial activity at all times.
Simultaneously, Red Eléctrica is replacing the conductors of the Montetorrero-Espartal 220 kV and Escatrón-Espartal 220 kV power lines. This upgrade will increase transmission capacity without the need to build new axes while maintaining the existing voltage level. Red Eléctrica has invested a total of €15 million in these strategic initiatives for the region.

Projects in Aragón’s electricity transmission grid

In total, actions undertaken in Aragón up to 2026 will represent a combined investment of nearly €400 million. This figure corresponds to the infrastructure outlined in the electric Planning framework, as well as specific modifications introduced to strengthen the transmission grid. The aim is to accommodate new business projects and meet the growing demands driven by the increasing electrification and digitalisation of the economy, besides the ecological transition, by integrating energy from renewable sources.

A significant portion of this infrastructure focuses on renewable energy development, such as the Almendrales 400 kV sub-station in Mequinenza (Zaragoza). It also supports industrial growth in new areas or consolidates existing ones, as seen with the Espartal 220 kV sub-station in El Burgo de Ebro (Zaragoza) and the upcoming Calatorao 220 kV sub-station. These projects will enable more large-scale consumers to connect to Aragon’s transmission grid. 

Additionally, Red Eléctrica is working on grid development and expansion by installing new consumer bays and reinforcements at various sub-stations across Aragon’s three provinces. These include the Ave Zaragoza 220 kV, Esquedas 220 kV, Montetorrero 220 kV, Peñaflor 400 and 220 kV, Plaza II 220 kV, Mudéjar 400 kV, Cartujos 220 kV, and Villanueva de Gállego 220 kV sub-stations. 

Meanwhile, progress continues on the regulatory approval and development of new axes, making the electricity transmission grid even more robust, interconnected, and secure. Some noteworthy projects include the Mezquita-Platea-Requena, Peñalba-Mangraners, Escatrón-Els Aubals-La Secuita, and Magallón-La Serna lines, which will increase the connections between Aragon and the regions of Valencia, Catalonia, and Navarre, respectively.
