According to data from Red Eléctrica, solar photovoltaic (PV), with a total capacity of 32,043 MW, has surpassed wind power (32,007 MW) to become the technology with the highest installed capacity in Spain. Solar PV now represents nearly 25% of Spain’s total installed power capacity. 

The addition of newly commissioned MW has further strengthened the share of renewable energy technologies, which now make up 66% of Spain’s total generation capacity, highlighting the country’s progress in its energy transition.

Favourable weather conditions for electricity generation, combined with newly commissioned MW, made 2024 the first year solar PV ranked among the top three technologies in Spain’s power generation mix. Solar PV generated 44,520 GWh in 2024 —the highest annual output in its history—capturing a 17% share of total electricity production. 

Furthermore, in January 2025, solar PV accounted for 9.5% of total monthly electricity generation, producing 2,292 GWh —an 18.6% increase over January of the previous year.
