• The Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission highlighted the travelling exhibition as good practice for the social acceptance of projects.

Red Eléctrica’s travelling exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket’ has been chosen by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy as one of the five best practices of European TSOs (Transmission and System Operator) in order to improve the understanding of the need to develop electricity transmission facilities, as well as to foster their social acceptance.

By means of this recognition, the European Commission has emphasised that this initiative, launched by Red Eléctrica in 2010 and which shows how the electricity system works as a whole, is an experience that is transferable to all Member States of the EU.

The exhibition that will be at the Museo Abierto of Mérida until October, explains how electricity is generated and transported, how it manifests itself, and how electricity systems are operated so that electrical power is available on-demand (whenever a user requests it).

One of the main objectives that Red Eléctrica seeks through this initiative is to improve social awareness of the need for electricity transmission facilities and, therefore the cities where it has been on exhibit are associated with transmission grid expansion, construction and development projects in which Red Eléctrica is working.

In its first four years, ‘A highway behind the wall socket’ has been on exhibit in Granada, Logroño, Valladolid, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Seville and Merida, and has been visited by over 275,000 people.

Red Eléctrica’s firm backing for interactivity through their ‘A highway behind the wall socket’ exhibition invites visitors to discover for themselves, by means of simulators, videos, experiments, games and scale models, the role electricity plays in our society, what path it follows until it reaches consumers and how energy should be used in a responsible way.
