Red Eléctrica de España inaugurates today in La Coruña its exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket’ at the Palace of Exhibitions and Congresses of La Coruña (Palexco), which will be open to the public until 30 April 2020. The exhibition was designed and created by Red Eléctrica with the aim of explaining, in a highly didactic way and via an interactive journey, how the Spanish electricity system works, and which seeks to raise awareness among citizens on the efficient use and responsible consumption of electricity.

Red Eléctrica’s Chairman, Jordi Sevilla, has been accompanied in this inauguration ceremony by the Mayoress of La Coruña, Ms. Inés Rey and the Government’s Regional Delegate for Galicia, Javier Losada. The Chairman accompanied the authorities on a tour of the travelling exhibition, which now visits the city of La Coruña after having been on exhibit in the following Spanish cities: Granada, Logroño, Valladolid, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Seville, Merida, Tarrasa, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Bilbao. This exhibition has been visited by more than one million people since it was first launched in 2010.

The exhibition is comprised of three areas: one devoted to explaining the properties of electricity as a physical phenomenon; a second area focused on showing how the electricity supply process works and explaining the challenge of achieving the balance between generation and consumption, and which also seeks to showcase the role played by the transmission grid in this process.

Lastly, in the third area of the exhibition, the visitor, as a citizen and consumer, becomes the protagonist of the electricity process with the ability to be a responsible player and choose what, how and when to consume, and which additionally proposes some ideas and recommendations for a rational and efficient use of energy.

The exhibition also includes a series of educational initiatives that seek to arouse the curiosity of students of different ages about the electricity system. With this in mind, for example, Red Eléctrica has designed and published educational materials on its website that can help schoolchildren to deepen and better understand the contents and aspects covered by the exhibition. Additionally, the Company also makes information available to teachers to help them prepare the visit in advance and thus make the most of the exhibition.

The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission, as part of its strategy to promote public acceptance of electricity infrastructure, highlighted this exhibition as one of the five best communication initiatives of European transmission system operators and identified it as a prime example of dissemination that is transferrable to all Member States of the European Union.
