Red Eléctrica de España will support the Federation of Fishermen's Associations of the Balearic Islands in the undertaking of two projects related to sustainable marine development. The first will focus on the collection of solid waste at sea by the fishing fleet, while the second will consist of education and awareness actions in order to promote the consumption of local fish. These initiatives are set out within the collaboration agreement signed yesterday between the two entities.

According to the agreement, the Federation of Fishermen's Associations of the Balearic Islands will carry out a project to study the capacity of the fishing fleet to collect solid waste compared to other surface collection systems currently being used near the coast.

Furthermore, the federation will conduct a second project aimed at promoting the consumption of local fish, which will assess the current consumption habits as well as the new target consumption models; the degree of knowledge of the local product; the promotion and inclusion of fish in local and school menus; the role of the restaurant sector and local markets, and the marketing strategy applied by large supermarkets regarding the consumption of local fish.

This agreement is part of the Red Eléctrica’s 2030 Sustainability Commitment and its Corporate Responsibility Policy, which promotes the creation of shared value among the various stakeholder groups in the territories in which its facilities are located.

At present, the Company is building or plans to build a series of electricity infrastructures, among which are the submarine electricity interconnections between Majorca and Menorca, currently underway, or the new link between Ibiza and Formentera, which is currently in the permitting process phase. Moreover, there could be new future submarine interconnections, that according to the next electricity planning of the government, may be constructed in order to make the energy transition possible.
