The Regional Minister for Territory, Energy and Mobility, Marc Pons, and the General Manager of System Operation Division of Red Eléctrica de España, Miguel Duvison, today signed an agreement for the deployment and development of electric mobility in the Balearic Islands. The signing ceremony was also attended by the General Director of Energy and Climate Change, Ferran Rosa, and Red Eléctrica’s Regional Delegate in the Balearic Islands, Eduardo Maynau.

This agreement is defined and established within the current context of electric mobility, in the promotion of EV charging infrastructure and the sustainable development of urban and interurban mobility, aspects considered by the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition of the Balearic Islands.

The objective of the agreement is to facilitate the integration of the electric vehicle into the electricity system as a whole through the Control Centre for the Electric Vehicle (CECOVEL) and improve both the public administrations’ management of charging points and the demand for electricity.

CECOVEL is a pioneer centre in Europe and Spain, the first of its kind with these characteristics developed by a TSO. It is a collaborative project with the main mobility actors in Spain that enables the demand of electric vehicles to be monitored in real time in order to evaluate their impact and integration into the electricity system in a safe and efficient way.

Thanks to the agreement, CECOVEL will monitor the 300 charging points distributed throughout the Balearic Islands’ municipalities and included in the Electric Mobility Plan of the Balearic Islands promoted by the Regional Ministry of Territory, Energy and Mobility of the Balearic Islands. Currently, CECOVEL manages a total of 1,350 charging points nationwide.

Furthermore, the agreement includes an essential section that encompasses the development and carrying out of informative and educational actions related to electric mobility.

This agreement showcases the Company’s engagement in this field and must be added to other  previous commitments undertaken by Red Eléctrica such as the agreement recently signed with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, an agreement that facilitates collaboration in the smart management of municipal charging points as well as the provision of technical assistance and support for the training of personnel in this field. Additionally the Company also signed an agreement on 4 April with Ibil, the EV technology and charge operator, to promote electric mobility through the development of ultra-fast charging infrastructure and the analysis of the impact of new technologies that allow vehicles to return energy back into the grid.

The electricity system has the capacity to absorb the demand from the future increase in the number of electric vehicles. Forecasts indicate that, of the approximately 25,000 electric vehicles - two thousand in the Balearic Islands: one thousand cars or vans and one thousand motorcycles and mopeds - that circulate around the country today, will become part of a total of 2.4 million in 2030.

Through this agreement, Red Eléctrica joins the commitment to promote sustainable mobility and strengthens its ongoing commitment to a decarbonised energy model, in line with European targets and those defined at a national level in the energy transition process.
