Red Eléctrica de España commences work to enlarge the Muniesa substation in Teruel
- The enlargement will enable the integration of more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy into the electricity system
- Since 2011, Red Eléctrica has invested €138 million in infrastructure improvements in the province of Teruel.
Red Eléctrica de España has begun the enlargement project of the Muniesa substation, key for the development of renewable energy in the autonomous community of Aragón. The enlargement of the substation will enable the integration of 1,090 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into the electricity system.
The enlargement of the Muniesa 400 kilovolt (kV) substation, included within the framework of actions being carried out by the Company for the energy transition towards a more sustainable model, is being undertaken in order to enable the evacuation of 940 MW of wind energy and 150 MW of solar photovoltaic energy generated in the region. These works are part of the grid improvement actions carried out by the Company over recent years on electricity lines and substations in Teruel.
This substation is part of the 400 kV Fuendetodos-Mezquita line, an infrastructure of almost 80 kilometres in length inaugurated in 2012 after an investment of 39.6 million euros. It was the first 400 kV transmission axis to support the distribution of electricity in the area and has been followed more recently by the construction of other infrastructure such as the Mezquita-Morella and Mudéjar-Morella lines, therefore improving the electricity grid in the province.
Furthermore, and in order to continue improving the transmission grid in Teruel, Red Eléctrica plans to build the 220 kV Mezquita-Valdeconejos-Escucha axis in the coming months. With an estimated investment of 11 million euros, this project is included in the 2015-2020 Electricity Infrastructure Planning approved by the Government of Spain and represents the main project of the Company to be carried out in the province.
Environmental improvements in the surroundings of Muniesa
A part of its sustainability policy, Red Eléctrica has agreed to collaborate with the Local Council of Muniesa on a project of general interest to refurbish the well-known natural spring know as La Fontana and its surrounding area, a very popular and visited space in this municipality located to the north of the province of Teruel, bordering with the province of Zaragoza and within the region known as the ‘Cuencas Mineras’.
Red Eléctrica’s Delegate in Aragón, José Ignacio Lallana, has signed a collaboration agreement with the Mayor of Muniesa, José Luis Iranzo, in order to carry out out this improvement action, for which the Company has earmarked 10,000 euros. These works are scheduled to be completed in 2019.
