Wind power beats the all-time record for daily production in the peninsular electricity system

24/01/2019

Wind power technology on 23 January 2019 was responsible for the production of 367,697 MWh, setting a new all-time high for daily wind energy generation. This figure represents an increase of 0.6% compared to the previous all-time high, set on 12 February 2016 when a total of 365,384 MWh was produced by the wind turbines of the peninsular electricity system.

The new wind power generation record represented 43.2% of the total generation mix in the Spanish electricity system meaning that wind was the leading generation technology yesterday, followed by nuclear (17.7%) and coal (12.8%), according to the provisional data published today in the Daily Balance Report of Red Eléctrica de España.

Yesterday, during the day, when wind was a key player in the peninsular electricity system, the share of the complete set of renewable energy generating facilities represented 53.3% of the generation mix and the clean technologies (which do not emit CO2 into the atmosphere) produced 71.3% of the total.

Yesterday, 23 January, the maximum instantaneous wind power production of the day was registered at 4:55 p.m., at which time the wind conditions allowed the integration of 16,633 MW of wind power into the system.

The maximum hourly wind power production was registered between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., when a total of 16,456 MWh were produced, equivalent to 45.8% of the total hourly generation mix.

Surpassing previous wind power generation all-time highs would not be possible without the development of technologies that facilitate the maximum use of wind power and also without the efforts being made to increase the installed wind power capacity in the Spanish electricity system, which according to Red Eléctrica’s data as at the end of 2018, stands at 23,041 MW.

New renewable energy will have to increase around 5,000 MW each year until 2030 as part of the energy transition in order to meet the targets set by the European Union regarding decarbonisation and the fight against climate change, which include that 32% of the final energy consumed be of renewable origin.
