95.9% of the electricity consumed on the island of El Hierro during the month of July was of renewable origin setting the all-time high for the monthly integration of renewable in Spain to date, according to provisional data of the system operator, Red Eléctrica de España.

In the period between January and July 2018, renewable generation on the island of El Hierro has covered 67.3% of its electricity demand, which represents a value 17.5 percentage points higher than in the same period in 2017.

The favourable wind conditions and the operational improvements recently introduced into the system together with the collaboration between Red Eléctrica and the hydroelectric power station of Gorona del Viento have made it possible to increase the integration of renewable generation into the electricity system of El Hierro.

The island of El Hierro recorded a monthly demand of 4,065 MWh during July, which is 0.5% of the demand of the Canary Islands as a whole, which stood at 761,641 MWh during the month.

An island that used 100% renewable energy for more than 18 days

As was the case in February of this year, the electricity system of El Hierro covered its electricity demand with 100% renewable energy consecutively for 18 days and 9 hours, starting this period of uninterrupted renewable production on 15 July and ending this morning, 2 August.

Since the commissioning of the Gorona del Viento hydro-wind power station, the island of El Hierro has totalled more than 3,400 hours of demand coverage using 100% renewable energy.
