Red Eléctrica de España has invested 8.4 million euros in the voltage uprating of the line that runs between the Bernat (Alcira) and Benicull electricity substations in Valencia increasing it from 132 kilovolts (kV) to 220 kV.

The work carried out included increasing the height of the towers, reinforcing the existing tower foundations and adjusting the tension of the overhead conductors along a route of just over 7 km. This project also included the execution of two new underground line sections, of half a kilometre in length.

The 220 kV double-circuit Bernat-Benicull line improves support for the electricity distribution network in the area concerned by connecting this network to the new 220 kV Benicull substation. This action concludes the voltage uprating works and the construction of substations undertaken in recent years that help strengthen the Catadau-Valle del Cárcer-Gandía/Valldigna-Bernat-Benicull axis in order to improve the quality and reliability of the electricity supply in the districts of La Ribera Alta, La Ribera Baja and La Safor.

Voltage uprating of transmission lines improves and optimises the existing infrastructure with minimal impact on the territory and increases the transmission capacity of the line, in addition to helping resolve the system’s technical constraints due to transmission capacity. Furthermore, it also contributes to improving electricity distribution in the area, without the need to build new infrastructure or modify the existing layout of the line.

Red Eléctrica de España has been carrying out this programme of actions for more than 15 years, which to date has represented an overall increase in transmission power capacity of over 20,000 megawatts.
