The Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum and Red Eléctrica inaugurate the exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket’
The travelling exhibition has received more than 986,000 visits during its tour through different cities of Spain and will be on exhibit in this museum until February 2019.
The President of the Board of Trustees of the Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum and Regional Deputy of Euskera and Culture of Vizcaya, Lorea Bilbao; the Councillor of the Mobility and Sustainability Area for the Bilbao City Council, Alfonso Gil, and the Assistant Corporate Director to the CEO of Red Eléctrica de España, Francisco Ruiz, have today inaugurated the travelling exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’ in the Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum, where it will remain on exhibit until February 2019.
This travelling exhibition was designed and created by Red Eléctrica with the aim of explaining, in a highly didactic way and via an interactive journey, how the Spanish electricity system works and seeks to raise awareness among citizens on the efficient and responsible use of energy.
The exhibition is comprised of three areas, the first area is devoted to the properties of electricity as a physical phenomenon. The second puts in perspective the electricity supply process and explains the challenge of achieving the balance between generation and consumption, the role played by the transmission grid and the importance of electricity interconnections between electricity systems.
Lastly, in the third area of the exhibition, the visitor, as a citizen and consumer, becomes the protagonist of the electricity process with the ability to be a responsible player and choose what, how and when to consume, and proposes some ideas and recommendations for a rational and efficient use of energy.
‘Interconnections Space’
On this occasion, the exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’, has expanded the space dedicated to international interconnections as they are of vital importance to guarantee security of supply and are essential in helping integrate a greater volume of renewable energy. This space includes an exhibit which recreates a seabed and offers information on the new interconnection with France, an underwater link across the Bay of Biscay that has been declared ‘Project of Common Interest’ by the European Commission and that will allow the exchange capacity with central and eastern European countries to be increased.
The exhibition also has a space for the digital educational game entreREDes, created by Red Eléctrica and which allows the academic curriculum content of students of secondary school to be reviewed in a fun and entertaining way and, at the same time, bring the knowledge of the electricity system closer to students in order to promote the development of a more sustainable energy model.
More than 986,000 visitors
‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’, has already visited nine other Spanish museums. Since its launch in 2010, it has been on exhibit in the following cities: Granada, Logroño, Valladolid, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Seville, Merida, Tarrasa, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia. This exhibition has been visited by more than 986,000 people throughout the last eight years.
The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission has highlighted this exhibition as one of the five best communication initiatives of European transmission system operators and a prime example of dissemination that is transferrable to all Member States of the European Union, both to improve citizens' knowledge on how the electricity system works and their understanding of the need to develop electricity transmission infrastructure.
