Red Eléctrica commissions the Azángaro-Juliaca-Puno line in Peru
- With this 115 km line, Red Eléctrica now manages a total of 1,314 km of circuit in Peru
Red Eléctrica Internacional, through its subsidiary Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur 2, has commissioned the 115 km long Azángaro-Juliaca-Puno 220 kilovolt (kV) electricity line in southern Peru. The project, awarded in an international public tendering process in 2015, has represented an estimated investment of 70 million dollars (some 60 million euros) by the Peruvian State and also includes the design, financing and construction of the infrastructure, its operation and maintenance for a period of 30 years.
This new infrastructure enables the evacuation of energy from the Ángel and San Gabán hydroelectric power stations and helps reduce the overload of the existing 138 kV lines. In addition, it strengthens the transformer capacity in the Azángaro, Juliaca and Puno substations, which in turn helps guarantee the electricity supply in these regions.
With the commissioning of this line, Red Eléctrica now manages 1,314 km of circuit in Peru, which places the Company in a favourable position for the future interconnection between Chile and Peru.
The commissioning of this line on 8 June consolidates Red Eléctrica as one of the largest electricity transmission companies in Peru and strengthens its presence in the southern part of the country, where it currently has three concession agreements in operation and two under construction.
The project is part of the international expansion plans of the Red Eléctrica Group and reinforces the role of Red Eléctrica Internacional as an electricity transmission agent in southern Peru, where it has been present since 1999. It owns the entirety of Red Eléctrica del Sur (REDESUR), a company responsible for managing the transmission of electricity in the south of the country (mainly in the regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna and Puno) and Red Eléctrica Andina (REA), a company specialised in electrical maintenance of medium and high voltage infrastructure, protection systems and telecommunications systems, as well as in providing technical consulting for energy projects.
REDESUR owns 100% of Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur (Tintaya-Socabaya 220 kV line and the Tintaya Nueva-Tintaya 138 kV line and associated substations); Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur 2 (Azángaro-Juliaca-Puno 220 kV line); Transmisora Eléctrica del Sur 3 (Montalvo-Los Heroes 220 kV line), and Transmisora Eléctrica de Sur 4 (Tintaya-Azángaro 220 kV line). The latter two lines are currently under construction and their commissioning date is forecasted for 2019 and 2021, respectively, and jointly represent an investment of some 90 million dollars (around 80 million euros).
