Red Eléctrica presents the awards to its best in-house energy efficiency projects of 2017
The Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España, José Folgado; the Corporate Director of Resources, Ángel Mahou, and the Manager of the Human Resources area, Jose Antonio Vernia, today presented the awards for its best in-house energy efficiency projects of 2017 at the 6th Edition of the Red Eléctrica eficiente Awards.
The Company’s Red Eléctrica eficiente programme promotes the development of initiatives that help showcase the Group's commitment to energy efficiency and to the fight against climate change. With these awards, the Company seeks to engage all its employees in said commitment through the exchange of knowledge and good practices among all areas of the business.
In this sixth edition, a total of ten projects were received in three categories: implementation of energy-saving measures, which seek to introduce improvements in facilities and processes; implementation of zero waste initiatives, water-saving measures, and sustainable mobility, aimed at achieving a higher level of responsible consumption of resources in the work centres, and sensitisation and awareness raising initiatives regarding the appropriate use of energy.
Award-winning projects
The jury awarded the project named ‘Geothermal energy at Red Eléctrica’, in the category of energy-saving measures, for contributing to improving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) in the Red Eléctrica Campus buildings in Tres Cantos and at the Demarcación Centro offices in San Sebastián de los Reyes, both in the Community of Madrid, through the use of geothermal energy, complementing it with other systems to reduce energy consumption. It has been estimated that the geothermal installation will save 57,900 kilowatt hours per year.
The project ‘Obsolete transformers as a new resource’ has been recognised in the category of implementation of zero-waste initiatives as a measure that allows substation voltage transformers to be reintegrated into the value chain as new resources or raw materials through their auction to waste managers. It is a project aligned with the European circular economy strategies.
And in the sensitisation and awareness raising initiatives category, the award went to the ‘Flash App’, an application accessible from mobile phones that seeks to bring employees closer to the reality of the new energy model, as well as improving and expanding the Company's knowledge regarding smart grids.
Initiatives carried out within the framework of the Red Eléctrica eficiente programme are aligned with the objectives set out in the Sustainability Commitment of the Red Eléctrica Group and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which define the global Agenda for Sustainable Development
