Helsinki España and Red Eléctrica kick-off the ‘Youth to Youth’ project in Tenerife
• Aimed at promoting human rights and a sustainable energy model in secondary education schools
The Helsinki España organisation and Red Eléctrica, with the collaboration of the University of La Laguna, today presented the Youth to Youth project, an education and awareness programme aimed at promoting human rights and a sustainable energy model geared towards students in secondary education schools in Tenerife and that has the support of university volunteers.
The event was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor for Relations with Society of the University of La Laguna, Francisco Javier García, and was attended by the Director-General for Industry and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Justo Artiles; the General Director of the Canary Islands’ Agency for University Quality and Educational Assessment, María Teresa Acosta; the General Secretary of Helsinki España, María Jaén, and Red Eléctrica’s Delegate in the Canary Islands, Ainara Irigoyen, as well as the Paralympic athletes, Michelle Alonso and Judit Rolo.
Red Eléctrica sponsors this project, which begins today, in which university volunteers receive specific training in human rights that they will later teach to students in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of secondary education in Tenerife by applying a methodology that encourages the active participation of students and promotes cooperative learning, solidarity, creativity and trust. During this school year, special focus will be placed on issues such as respect for the natural and social environment and the development of a sustainable energy model in the Canary Islands.
Similarly, the Company collaborates on the training of university students by means of several sessions that provide the Company’s knowledge and experience regarding the creation of shared value and it contributes to the achievement of a new sustainable energy model. Additionally, the Company provide educational material by means of the game entreREDes, the digital game created by Red Eléctrica that to bring the secondary school students how the electricity system works and the link between electricity and sustainable social progress, while reviewing curricular subjects.
Last year, Red Eléctrica collaborated on the Youth to Youth project in Gran Canaria, in which 30 university volunteers taught 72 workshops to more than 460 school students. The programme was aimed at promoting values such as tolerance, equality, non-discrimination and energy sustainability, making young students aware of the importance of efficient and respectful with the environment electricity consumption.
Red Eléctrica’s Delegate in the Canary Islands, Ainara Irigoyen, highlighted during the presentation that "the business vision of the Company, which is based on ethical and responsible management and a firm commitment to sustainable development, fits perfectly with the philosophy of this initiative". She also stated that "Red Eléctrica’s projects and actions seek to generate a positive impact on the islands with the aim of promoting progress, culture and social wellbeing of the community, and contributing to the development of a more environmentally sustainable and more efficient energy model for the islands".
Helsinki Spain has stressed how the Youth to Youth project contributes to the development of a culture of human rights in which children and young people are aware of their own rights and obligations towards others, favouring their development as responsible members of a global, interdependent, free and peaceful, pluralistic and inclusive society. Young university students, far from becoming mere listeners, take a leading role in the project and become responsible for the transformation in their communities.
