Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia that is responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, is continuing to strengthen and develop the transmission grid in Andalusia. The company obtained 18 operational licences in the last quarter of 2024 for the new infrastructures it has built. They were supplemented by another seven obtained over the year, making a total of 25 confirmed authorisations for commissioning projects with a volume of investment of 103 million euros.

Thanks to these authorisations, distributed over the eight provinces of Andalusia, Red Eléctrica is making a decisive contribution to the economic and social development of the region, but also supporting the growth of new industry, railway corridors, and the integration of renewable energies. It is also strengthening the stability and control of the system by incorporating new technologies in the south of Spain (STATCOM). To achieve this, Red Eléctrica has been intensively studying and adapting the facilities installed in distinct areas and social situations, as reflected in the processes carried out with different official bodies, nineteen with the Regional Government of Andalusia and six with the Central Government. 

By developing these infrastructures, Red Eléctrica has reaffirmed its commitment to the region and the execution of its 2021-2026 Electricity Plan, approved by the Council of Ministers in March 2022 and which is binding for the company. This document specifically states that Andalusia will receive the largest share of the investment among the peninsular territories, with more than 520 million euros.

Support for industry in Andalusia

The authorisations obtained include a permit for the extension of the sub-station of Puebla de Guzmán, in Huelva, to connect the future Costa de la Luz - Puebla de Guzmán 220 kV line. This is a strategic infrastructure for encouraging new developments in industry and mining in the Pyrite Belt area and making the electricity supply for the coastal areas around Huelva more robust. 

The commissioning of the high-voltage line to connect the sub-station of Zumajo (at Vejer de la Frontera, Cadiz) with that of Puerto Real, has also been possible after a long and complex process of development that has ensured its adaptation to its surroundings in technical, social, and environmental terms. This line will serve to meet the demand for electricity from the citizens of Puerto Real and to cover the increasing demand for energy from industry and urban planning from the towns along the Bay of Cadiz.

Leadership in renewables in Andalusia and decarbonisation in the Strait of Gibraltar

As regards the installations for integrating renewable energies, the most important are the expansions of the 220 kV sub-stations of Cristobal Colón and Palos in Huelva, Dos Hermanas and Quintos in Seville, Pinar del Rey, Mirabal and Cañuelo in Cadiz, and Tajo de la Encantada, in Malaga.

The 220 kV sub-station in Algeciras marks a significant strategic advance in one of the company’s most important projects, the electrical connection between the peninsula and the autonomous city of Ceuta, a project of national importance in the progress towards social equality and territorial cohesion.

Infrastructures to strengthen the grid and encourage railway lines

In the provinces of Granada and Almeria, respectively, the expansion of the Illora 220 kV sub-station will enable connections with the future Saleres sub-station to guarantee the electricity supply for the south of Granada, while the Tabernas 400 kV sub-station will provide electricity for the major train route known as the Mediterranean Corridor. The repowering of the 220 kV Benahadux-Órgiva line has also been completed, which passes through both provinces.

Finally, the work for repowering the Guadame-Olivares 220 kV power line has finished, giving it greater transmission capacity to strengthen the security of supply in the area and to support the implementation of new renewable energy projects and other business developments.
