Red Eléctrica, Redeia’s company responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has begun construction on the new Luminabaso 220 kV electrical substation in Amorebieta-Etxano, which will supply power to the future Basque Y rail corridors. With this project, Red Eléctrica will provide the necessary power supply for the high-speed rail lines connecting the three Basque capitals. Additionally, the Luminabaso substation will reinforce the grid and improve its interconnection, which may facilitate future energy-intensive projects.

The new GIS (Gas-Insulated Switchgear) substation, in which Red Eléctrica will invest €9 million, is a shielded facility featuring state-of-the-art technology that enables a compact, fully integrated infrastructure housed inside a building. This technology reduces land use by 75%, minimises visual impact, and enhances environmental integration.

The construction work has now begun in the Biscayan town of Amorebieta-Etxano. It will continue throughout 2025, with the substation expected to be operational in 2026. 

With this initiative, Red Eléctrica is completing the transmission grid infrastructure needed to power the Basque Y railway, reinforcing its commitment to the Basque Country (CAPV) and its people. The new substation is included in the 2021–2026 Electricity Transmission Grid Planning for Euskadi, approved by the Council of Ministers and binding for the company.
