Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, has successfully expanded its substation in Carmona, Seville. This is yet another step towards integrating the province's plentiful renewable resources and driving the process of ecological transition in the region and the country. 

The expansion project has entailed an investment of more than €1.5 million and consisted of building a new position in the existing 220 kV substation with GIS technology - more compact and housed within a building - in the municipality of Carmona, Seville. The Government of Andalusia has just authorised the operation of this new position, which will be used expressly for the evacuation of renewable energies from photovoltaic solar farms around this municipality in Seville. 

This initiative will enable Red Eléctrica to further cement its leadership as a national renewable energy operator in Andalusia. This was confirmed in a 2024 report on the electricity system, which highlighted that Andalusia is the Spanish region with the most solar photovoltaic installations after commissioning 2,253 new megawatts of this technology throughout the year. It was the highest power installed in Spain last year.

These figures are possible thanks to the investments made by Red Eléctrica to develop the region’s grid. In 2024 alone, the company obtained more than 25 operating permits, which have provided a definitive boost for the advancement of ecological transition and the development of the industry in Andalusia.

All these developments are included in the current Electrical Planning, which sets out the largest investment in electrical infrastructure in the Peninsula for Andalusia.
