National electricity demand increased by 2.3% in January compared to the same month of the previous year, after accounting for the effects of temperature and working patterns. In gross terms, electricity demand is estimated at 22,682 GWh, which is a 1.5% increase compared to January 2024.

This January, renewable energy facilities generated 13,524 GWh (12% more than in January 2024) and accounted for 55.8% of the total, while 77.2% of the electricity was produced without emitting CO₂ equivalent.

The primary source of production for the month was once again wind energy, with a share of 30.9%, followed by nuclear (21.5%), combined cycle (13.8%), and hydropower, which was responsible for 13.3% of the total. Furthermore, solar photovoltaic energy production grew by 18.6% in January and accounted for 9.5% of the mix.

Of the total energy generated, 444 GWh were provided to storage facilities, and 1,120 GWh were scheduled for export to neighbouring countries, allowing these mechanisms to enable greater utilisation of the energy generated through renewable technologies.

The electricity system in the Balearic and Canary Islands

In the Balearic Islands, demand for electricity in January was 0.4% lower than in the same month in 2024, after accounting for the effects of working patterns and temperatures. This means that gross demand is estimated at 461,591 MWh, which is 2.7% higher than in January of the previous year.

Regarding generation, combined cycle generation was the primary source in the islands this month, accounting for 77.2% of the energy produced in the Balearic Islands. Renewable energy generated in the Balearic community represented 10.4% of the total. Renewable production in the Balearic Islands increased by 12.1% in January compared to the same month last year.

Additionally, during this month, the underwater link between the Peninsula and Mallorca helped cover 18.5% of demand for electricity in the Balearic Islands.

In the Canary Islands, electricity demand increased by 2% compared to the same month in 2024, taking into account the effects of working patterns and temperatures. In gross terms, demand was 757,885 MWh, an increase of 1.2%.

Regarding electricity generation in the Canary Islands, combined cycle generation was also the primary source in December, accounting for 47.8% of the total. Renewable energy reached a share of 16.8% of production, generating 127,051 MWh, which is 59.9% more than in the same month of the previous year. Meanwhile, wind power contributed 12.5% to the total this month.
