Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, has begun work this week on a renovation plan for three lines in Barcelona, to bolster the safety and efficiency of the electricity system in the area around Catalonia’s capital city.  Specifically, these actions will be carried out on the Barcelona-Sagrera line; on the Maragall-Sagrera line; and on the Badalona-Guixeres line, all 220 kV lines.

The renovation will consist of the replacement of the cables of these three underground lines, part of them in galleries, which were originally built in the 1980s. In their renovation, Red Eléctrica will use new dry cable technology that allows for greater efficiency in the transmission of energy and reinforces the safety and supply of a bustling city.

The first of these works began this week. It corresponds to the Barcelona-Sagrera line, which is 5.21 km long and is scheduled to come into service in 2026. Similarly, in the third quarter of this year, the replacement for the 5.01 km Maragall-Sagrera line will begin, and at the end of the year, the renovation of the Badalona-Guixeres line will begin, covering a route of 2.2 km.

Red Eléctrica will invest a total of 25.5 million euros in the renovation and modernisation of these three lines, as part of the maintenance and ongoing improvement plan for Red Eléctrica's infrastructures in the city of Barcelona. The set of new lines will be operational in 2027.
