Post-IHLD Reconstruction

Red Eléctrica fully restores normal operations to the electricity transmission grid in Valencia following the IHLD

Over the past four months, Red Eléctrica's teams have repaired damage to 35 towers, 20 km of circuits, and a substation.

The completion of the recovery work allows for the removal of the temporary measures put in place to ensure adequate electricity supply following the IHLD.

The grid’s supply remained uninterrupted thanks to its highly interconnected structure and the swift response from the company.

Red Eléctrica, the subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission and operation of the electricity system in Spain, has restored the transmission grid in Valencia to its pre-29 October condition, when it was severely damaged by the effects of the IHLD. In recent days, recovery work has been finalised, including the completion of the last affected 400 kV line and the energisation of several 220 kV lines. This follows the replacement of 35 damaged towers and 20 km of circuits, which was completed at the end of January.

The restoration of full normal operations, made possible by the dedication of the company's staff, includes the removal of the temporary emergency measures implemented in early November to bolster the distribution grid.

Nevertheless, the extensive interconnection of the grid and the prompt response by Red Eléctrica ensured the continuous availability of the electricity transmission grid, despite adverse weather conditions, including seven tornadoes causing significant damage in Catadau, Paiporta, and Requena. Furthermore, a substation was flooded in Quart de Poblet.
