Red Eléctrica, the Redeia subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and the operation of the Spanish electricity system, has commissioned the new Los Arenales-Cáceres-Trujillo axis, a key project for bolstering the transmission grid in Extremadura and supporting the distribution network in Cáceres. This ensures quality of supply for both residents and businesses operating in the province. 

The Los Arenales-Cáceres-Trujillo axis is 70 kilometres long, with 8 kilometres underground. It features a double 220 kV circuit connecting the new Los Arenales 220 kV substation to the Cáceres and Trujillo substations, which have been expanded as part of this project. Red Eléctrica has invested €40 million in the construction of these infrastructures, which are part of the current electricity Planning, approved by the Council of Ministers and binding for Red Eléctrica. 

The new Los Arenales substation is a cornerstone of the meshed system in the province and a key component in strengthening the power supply of the city of Cáceres. Through this substation, the new axis connects to the José María Oriol substation via a 220-kilovolt line that Red Eléctrica commissioned in 2021. This line spans an additional 50 kilometres to the newly constructed 70 km.

As part of this project and in line with its commitment to biodiversity protection, Red Eléctrica, in collaboration with the regional Government of Extremadura, has developed a plan to repopulate rabbits in the Sierra de San Pedro Area of Regional Interest (ZIR), in the municipality of San Vicente de Alcántara. These rabbits will provide a food source for protected large raptors.
