Red Eléctrica begins construction of the new Abanilla sub-station to drive the ecological transition in the region of Murcia
The construction of this infrastructure and its associated works involves an investment of €6.8 million, which will enable the integration of new renewable energy sources.
As part of its Comprehensive Impact Strategy, the company will also refurbish and improve the recreational and children's play area at Dionisio Bueno Public School in the town.
Red Eléctrica, Redeia’s subsidiary responsible for electricity transmission and system operation in Spain, has begun construction of the new 400 kV sub-station in Abanilla. This facility is designed to accelerate the ecological transition by integrating renewable energy into the grid. The new sub-station will contribute to decarbonising power generation in the Region of Murcia.
With an investment of €6.8 million—including the associated works—Red Eléctrica has started the construction process with earthworks and site preparation, following the necessary authorisations from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. The sub-station is located in the northwest area of the Abanilla municipality and will connect to the 400 kV Pinilla-Rocamora transmission line. It is also part of the current Electricity Planning, which has been approved by the Council of Ministers and is binding for Red Eléctrica.
Additionally, as part of Redeia’s Comprehensive Impact Strategy, the company has signed an agreement with the Abanilla City Council to collaborate in refurbishing and enhancing the recreational and children’s play area at Dionisio Bueno Public School. This renovation covers 2,700 m² and will serve not only the school but also the broader community, hosting a wide range of recreational and family-friendly activities, such as the Municipal Play Centre and Summer School.
Redeia’s Comprehensive Impact Strategy is designed to create value in the communities where its infrastructure is present. Therefore, the agreement between Red Eléctrica and the municipal government addresses a real community need, as it will enhance the safety and well-being of local children. During the signing of the agreement with Abanilla’s mayor, José Antonio Blasco, Maite Vela, Redeia’s delegate for Eastern Spain, stated: ‘Redeia is committed to the town of Abanilla, so this investment reflects our dedication to supporting local needs—such as improving the outdoor facilities of one of the town’s public schools.’
