Today, Red Eléctrica representatives met with La Línea mayor Juan Franco and residents of the Santa Margarita residential area. The goal of this meeting was to discuss the ongoing works in the city related to the underground installation of the electrical cable connecting the peninsula to Ceuta – a strategic national project.

Having received all necessary authorisations and permits, these works are being carried out in coordination with the relevant authorities to minimise their impact on the area. Therefore, Red Eléctrica has reassured both the council and residents that neither the construction work nor the future underground cable poses any health risks to the local population.

The company has also confirmed that the corresponding civil works will be completed within a maximum of two weeks. Initially, the underground installation along Avenida del Burgo was scheduled to be completed earlier but had to be postponed due to recent heavy rains. However, work on the final section of Burgo, near the supermarket, is set to be completed today.

Additionally, Red Eléctrica has committed to fully restoring any asphalt damaged by the works and related traffic on the Carretera Circular and Calle Los Altos de Santa Margarita. The company’s goal is to leave the roads in an even better condition than before, ensuring long-term benefits for residents. The restoration efforts will be carried out in coordination with the La Línea city council.

Next steps

Once the civil works are completed, the cable-laying phase will begin. This stage will have minimal impact on traffic, while normal use of the affected areas will be largely restored. This process is scheduled to take place between late March and late April. Currently, alternative solutions are being analysed to further minimise any potential disruptions.

The route for the underground cable linking the peninsula with Ceuta has been carefully planned to utilise existing infrastructure and roadways, running beneath pavements or road surfaces and alongside public utility services. This approach has avoided the need for at least ten overhead supports, thereby eliminating visual impact. 

In addition to the urban undergrounding, the land-sea cable transition will be carried out using horizontal directional drilling techniques. This method serves to prevent any impact on beaches, swimming areas, and protected species on the seafront. The installation will follow the path of existing cables or established infrastructure corridors. 

While this electrical infrastructure is primarily designed to provide Ceuta with a stable power supply, it will also benefit the towns of La Línea and San Roque along its route by strengthening their electrical infrastructure. This will enhance their ability to meet future energy demands, both residential and industrial.
