Red Eléctrica commissions the new Abrera sub-station to support Barcelona's automotive industry
The new sub-substation is a key piece of infrastructure for Catalonia's industrial and economic development, strengthening power supply and supporting electrification and energy transition plans by local businesses.
Thanks to an €8 million investment, the existing facility has been replaced by an encapsulated, shielded sub-station featuring GIS technology, which has a lower visual impact.
Red Eléctrica has commissioned the new 220 kV Abrera sub-station, located in the province of Barcelona, to strengthen electricity supply to the region’s industrial sector. The new sub-station will be crucial for driving industrial and economic development in the area, characterised by a significant presence of the automotive sector.
The project involved expanding and transforming the existing sub-station into a GIS technology-based, shielded substation with eight new bays and two additional backup bays. The new, more compact sub-station is designed to have a reduced visual impact and will feature an updated configuration that provides greater supply reliability and security for this area of high industrial demand.
Currently, the Abrera 220 kV sub-station serves the highly industrialised Baix Llobregat area. The new sub-station now strengthens the electricity supply in the area, supporting the electrification and energy transition plans of local businesses operating in the region and driving increased economic development and job creation. For some time, the new sub-station will coexist with the existing facility, which will be decommissioned once the automotive industry completes the infrastructures required to connect to the new project.
The project is included in the current 2021-2026 planning, which has been approved by the Council of Ministers and is binding for Red Eléctrica. In total, this expansion—carried out over ten months in 2024—represents an €8 million investment.
These efforts are part of Red Eléctrica’s ongoing commitment to the region and the continuous improvement of supply quality and security in support of Catalonia's economic and industrial development.
