Red Eléctrica, Redeia's subsidiary responsible for the operation and transmission of the Spanish electricity system, has begun construction on the new 220 kV Saguntum sub-station. This strategic initiative is crucial to ensure the electrical supply for the region's upcoming industrial projects. Moreover, it is a key driver for the economic revitalisation of Valencia and the Valencian Community.

The start of construction has posed a challenge for Red Eléctrica's teams following the impact of the DANA storm on the transmission grid in the province of Valencia. Despite the extensive preparatory work from previous months, meticulous planning has kept the project on schedule for summer 2026 commissioning. This planning process included detailed engineering, material procurement, and a smooth tendering process for construction.

Red Eléctrica will invest approximately 62 million euros in the new transmission grid developments planned for Sagunto. The aim of this allocation is to support the viability of significant investments in the automotive industry announced in the municipality through reliable electrical supply. In addition to the sub-station currently under construction, this infrastructure complex includes a 400 kV plant and the associated lines that connect both plants to the transmission grid.

Construction began after Red Eléctrica completed the administrative procedures for the approval of the 220 kV electrical plant project for the sub-station in October. Then, the company received in November approval for the power supply lines serving the plant and the necessary construction permit (known as AAC in Spanish) for these facilities.

The new sub-station is part of the amendments to the current electricity transmission grid development plan (known as MAP in Spanish), which were approved this year by the council of ministers. Following this, Red Eléctrica began the project approval process, having already completed all the necessary grid design engineering and environmental studies.
