Solar photovoltaic energy in Spain has exceeded production for all of 2023

The amount of solar photovoltaic energy generated in Spain up to 5 October 2024 was more than all the energy registered in 2023, according to data provided by Red Eléctrica. Last Saturday, this renewable technology reached 37,551 GWh, a figure that is higher than the 37,472 GWh recorded last year and which was itself a historical record.
The rise in solar photovoltaic production between January and this 5 October represents an increase of 19% over the same period in the previous year. According to the data available today, solar photovoltaic energy is, with 18.9% of the total, the third most abundant source of electricity in Spain since January in a share led by wind energy with 22.4% of the total. This contribution means that 57.5% of the energy produced in our country from January to last Saturday came from renewable sources, this highest figure ever recorded.
With so many hours of sunshine available, the summer months are the period when we can most easily appreciate the contribution of photovoltaic energy to the advance of the ecological transition. In fact, this technology has led the monthly production share in our country over four consecutive months this year (from May to August).
This year has also seen this technology beat various records for daily and monthly production. Last July was the month in which this technology made the greatest contribution since records began, with 5,817 GWh. Furthermore, on 12 July it achieved its highest daily production, with 212 GWh.
Increasingly renewable generating capacity
This positive growth is mainly due to the favourable weather conditions and the photovoltaic capacity installed in Spain, allowing us to make more and better use of solar radiation, an abundant resource in our country.
At present, solar photovoltaic energy is the second largest technology among our generation resources, with 28,691 MW installed. It is only exceeded by wind energy, with 31,617 MW. Thanks to the growth of them both, more than 63% of Spain’s generating capacity is made up of renewable technologies.
