Red Eléctrica starts the enlargement of the Abrera substation to help boost the automotive industry
- The enlargement of the substation will be essential for the development of the electrification projects of the automotive sector in Martorell.
- Thanks to an investment of €8 million, the current substation will be replaced with a configuration based on Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology housed inside a building,
Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Redeia responsible for the transmission of electricity and operation of the Spanish electricity system, has this week started work on the enlargement and transformation of the Abrera 220 kV substation, located in the province of Barcelona.
The 220 kV Abrera substation currently provides service to the Baix Llobregat area, which is highly industrialised and has a strong presence of the automotive sector. This new project will strengthen the electricity supply in the area and facilitate the electrification and energy transition plans of the companies that operate in the zone, thus promoting greater economic development and job creation.
The actions being carried out consist of transforming the existing substation into a GIS technology substation with eight new substation bays and two more reserve bays. The new substation, which is more compact and has a reduced visual impact, will have a new configuration that provides greater reliability and security of supply to this area of high industrial demand.
The project is included in the current planning for 2021-2026, approved by the Council of Ministers Agreement in March 2022 and is binding for Red Eléctrica. An estimated investment of €8 million has been earmarked for its execution. Having already obtained all the administrative and environmental permits and authorisations, work has already begun on the renovation of the substation. Works are expected to be completed in 2025.
All these actions are part of Red Eléctrica's ongoing commitment to the territory and the continuous improvement of the quality and security of supply to support the economic and industrial development of Catalonia.
