In November, renewables in Spain have already exceeded their production level for the whole of 2022, according to data published daily by Red Eléctrica, the Redeia company responsible for the transmission of electricity and operation of the national electricity system. Between 1 January and 17 November, the total renewable energy production reached 116,844 GWh at a national level, thus exceeding the figure of 116,695 GWh recorded for the whole of 2022.

This renewable generation has been possible thanks in part to favourable weather conditions for the production of hydro, solar photovoltaic and wind power. So far this year (up to 20 November), these technologies have increased their contribution to the national energy mix by 39.4%, 32% and 2%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2022. The increase in hydro in 2023 is mainly explained by the fact that low rainfall last year resulted in this technology reaching its lowest all-time generation since records began.

Thanks to this boost, renewable production grew by 14.3% compared to the same period in 2022, and today accounts for 49.9% of the total electricity generated nationwide in 2023.

So far, November has been a particularly prolific month in terms of generation from natural resources, as 61.6% of the total electricity produced in Spain from 1 to 20 November was renewable.

In fact, on 3 November, the Spanish electricity system recorded its maximum share of renewables in the total electricity produced in one single day, with a share of 73.3% of the mix.
