This morning, Fulgencio Gil, the Mayor of Lorca, and Redeia’s (Red Eléctrica’s parent company) delegate for Eastern Spain, Maite Vela, signed a collaboration agreement to create a Municipal Energy Office that will provide advice and support to citizens across a broad range of energy-related issues, including collective self-consumption, rate subsidies, optimising electricity bills, household savings, and bioclimatism. Furthermore, this office is an important milestone in the municipal project to create an energy community in our city. This initiative is dedicated to installing solar panels so that over 100 families in Lorca can benefit from it, free of charge, particularly those living in the Barrios Altos de Lorca district.

The mayor highlighted that “the main aim of this initiative is to create a ‘Municipal Energy Office,’ that will provide specialised advice to the residents of the historic city centre of Lorca, in order to promote collective self-consumption and tackle the residents’ specific energy-related needs.” Gil Jódar also stated that, in addition to improving the design of this future office, work will also be done on “creating the regulatory framework for the aid, choosing the beneficiaries, and training municipal technical staff in charge of managing this aid.”

The Lorca City Council has a Management Plan for the restoration of Lorca’s Historic City Centre, which, according to Fulgencio Gil, includes “the creation of an energy community to help residents reduce their vulnerability to energy poverty by allowing them to benefit from the clean energy generated by this energy community. The City Council will promote and facilitate this process, contributing both to improving local sustainability and reducing the vulnerability of Lorca’s population.”

The signed agreement establishes Red Eléctrica’s contribution, which “will be used entirely to fund the first stage of this project. Red Eléctrica joins this project as a collaborator, showing its interest in these types of social initiatives promoted by the City Council,” stated the mayor.

Gil Jódar thanked Red Eléctrica for its contribution towards this project and its contribution towards promoting the restoration and revitalisation of Lorca’s historic city centre. “The City Council would like to express our thanks to Red Eléctrica for its collaboration in the creation of this municipal office, which will significantly contribute towards the restoration of the historic city centre, as well as towards creating a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for our city, allowing countless families in Lorca to benefit and reinforcing our commitment to the environment.”

Likewise, Vela welcomed the agreement, which “is in line with Red Eléctrica’s and its parent company Redeia's social commitment,” and emphasised “the importance of well-informed citizens for optimal energy use.” Additionally, the delegate for Eastern Spain reiterated that “for the company, the commitment to sustainability is reflected in the creation of shared value for all members of society,” and to that end, defended the benefit of “collaborating on social innovation projects,” such as the one signed today in Lorca.
