Red Eléctrica, the Redeia company responsible for electricity transmission and the operation of Spain’s electricity system, will invest €38 million in the improvement of six substations in Catalonia in order to continue making progress in the quality and security of the electricity supply. The investment is included in the 2021-2026 Transmission Grid Planning and involves actions in Vic, Abrera, Rubí (where two substations are located), Can Jardí, Viladecans and Maials.

The most important action will be made in Abrera, with the renovation and adaptation of the substation to the Gas Insulated Switchgear format and will represent an investment of €12 million. The aim of this improvement is to provide service to the new electrification projects of the automobile industry linked to Seat. In the case of Vic and Can Jardí, the planned renovation of the substations will represent an investment of 9.2 and 6.5 million euros, respectively.

The rest of the planned actions include the improvement of the facilities at the Maials, Rubí and Viladecans substations with an overall investment of €10 million. These renovation and enlargement works will improve the operation of the electricity system and increase the security of supply in these regions.

In addition to these improvements, Red Eléctrica also plans to build three new substations in Catalonia. Specifically, the Cerdà substation, which is already under construction and will be the connection point for the electrification of the Port of Barcelona, with an investment of €7 million.

The Masdenverge substation, which, with an investment of €7 million, will be built in Tarragona to guarantee supply to the new economic and industrial developments in the south of Catalonia. Additionally, the Francolí substation will also be built in order to support the development of the chemical industrial estates in Tarragona and will have an investment of €5 million.

All these actions are part of Red Eléctrica's ongoing commitment to the continuous improvement of the quality and security of supply and to support the economic and industrial development of Catalonia.
