The Red Eléctrica Group has collaborated with the Government of Castilla-La Mancha in the creation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for the cultural heritage inventory in Castilla-La Mancha, a pioneering project in the region that has entailed the digitisation of almost 12,500 elements of protected areas in terms of cultural value, specifically: Sites of Cultural Interest (BIC); Sites of Heritage Interest (BIP); Elements of Heritage Interest (EIP), archaeological parks; and areas of protection and prevention that delimit the uses of these lands.

All these data can be consulted by the general public on the Castilla-La Mancha Map Portal. In this way, any individual or company will now be able to consult the information directly and quickly, and the work of the regional government's cultural staff will be facilitated, since until now any interested party had to submit a written request and technicians had to generate a reply by the same means. Thanks to the GIS, file processing times will now be shortened, making the consultation of protected areas related to works, environmental impact assessments, research, etc., more dynamic and the information will be available on the server itself, and not on paper and in separate records.

Red Eléctrica Group’s Sustainability Director, Antonio Calvo Roy; the Group’s regional delegate, Roberto Arranz; the Regional Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Rosa Ana Rodríguez; and the Deputy Regional Minister of Culture and Sports, Ana Muñoz, unveiled the system today, the culmination of an agreement signed by Red Eléctrica and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha a year ago, which represents a further step along the road towards the necessary digital transformation of public administrations.

Following the creation of the GIS, a new agreement was signed today to digitise cultural heritage information relating to archaeological and palaeontological settlements and ethnographic and industrial sites during 2022. This information, which is of a sensitive nature, can be used by researchers or administrations upon request. Given its high volume, it will begin in the provinces of Albacete and Cuenca, and in future agreements it may be extended to other provinces or modified according to the needs generated by new findings.
