Communiqué from Red Eléctrica de España

31/10/2021

In light of the information regarding possible electricity supply problems that have been reported in some European countries in recent weeks, Red Eléctrica de España, as operator of the Spanish electricity system, would like to clarify that there is no objective evidence to suggest that such an event could occur in Spain.

The electricity system on the Spanish mainland has a high level of coverage and its generation capacity - with more than 107 GW of installed power capacity (107,088 MW) - more than doubles any peak demand that has occurred to date. For example, the all-time maximum record of instantaneous power stands at 45,450 MW (recorded on 17 December 2007 - 6:53 p.m.); and the maximum instantaneous power recorded so far in 2021 reached a value of 42,225 MW on 8 January at 2:05 p.m.

The resilience of our electricity system has been demonstrated on numerous occasions. For example, during Storm Filomena, which took place at the beginning of the year, the Spanish electricity system was not compromised in any way and the electricity supply was guaranteed.

Red Eléctrica maintains regular communication and coordination actions with other electricity system operators in neighbouring countries, as well as with the technical manager of the Spanish Gas System, Enagás, to guarantee the security and quality of supply at all times.
