Red Eléctrica de España, the company responsible for electricity operations and transmission in Spain, and the Town Councils of La Línea de la Concepción and San Roque, have continued to progress towards an agreement for a new project to enable Ceuta to be connected to the Iberian peninsula while responding to the needs of both towns. Today, the chairwoman and the CEO of the company, Beatriz Corredor and Roberto García Merino, met the mayors Juan Franco and Juan Carlos Ruiz and the president of the provincial authority of Cadiz, Irene García, in the context of the meetings agreed during Corredor’s visit to La Línea in March.
At today’s meeting, Red Eléctrica presented a range of working scenarios for a new project that both towns will now study and which ensure that the line will be underground, eliminating the overhead lines originally planned for both areas. The company has also shared the results of studies carried out in recent months for all the alternatives considered for making the connection. This is a strategic project for Spain that was included in the 2015-2020 Electricity Plan and the 2021-2026 draft Electricity Plan, a document that sets out the State’s energy policy and which Red Eléctrica has been called on to carry out. It is also an opportunity and an example of Andalusia’s commitment to promoting energy transition in the region.
Red Eléctrica’s Chairwoman, Beatriz Corredor, commented that “as promised, we have listened to suggestions made by the public and will continue to respond to the demands of society in the region, because our goal is to find solutions that enable us to improve the lives of the people living in Campo de Gibraltar”.
All parties have agreed to another meeting to be held in 15 days’ time.
This activity is taking place alongside other projects similarly aligned with the fight against climate change that the Spanish Government is undertaking in the region, such as the close of the Thermal power plant of Los Barrios, the electrification of the Bobadilla-Algeciras railway line and the improved electricity supply for the port of Algeciras, among others.
