Discover what Red Eléctrica is, what we do, and why we are the backbone of the electricity system in Spain and the ecological transition.
What is energy storage?
An energy storage system temporarily converts electrical energy into another storable form of energy, allowing its delivery to be deferred to a later time. Currently, progress is being made on two technological solutions:
- Pumped hydro storage: This system uses two reservoirs at different elevations to store energy as the potential energy of water in the upper reservoir. When required, energy is generated by releasing water through turbines from the upper reservoir to the lower one.
- Batteries: A technology that stores energy using electrochemical processes.
Energy storage is essential for a successful ecological transition. It enhances the flexibility and security of the electricity system, maximises renewable energy integration, and optimises the use of interconnections between electrical systems.
