Red Eléctrica improves its position in the Bloomberg 2022 Gender Equality Index
The Red Eléctrica Group has improved its position and score in the 2022 edition of the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index (GEI), the global benchmark index that distinguishes companies that show a firm commitment to gender equality by measuring their performance in five aspects: female leadership and talent pipeline, equal pay and gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies and pro-women brand.
The Group is one of the 17 Spanish companies that have entered the 2022 edition, which includes 418 companies -among them 28 utilities-, from 45 countries and from 50 business sectors. Red Eléctrica's overall score is 4 points higher than in 2021 and remains above the average of the companies in the Index. The performance assessment of the Red Eléctrica Group is particularly high in terms of equal pay and anti-harassment measures. In addition, the Company has significantly improved its score as a pro-women brand.
Red Eléctrica's inclusion once again in Bloomberg's Gender Equality Index endorses the Company's track record in equality and diversity, two key values since its inception.
"Thanks to incorporating gender issues into our corporate culture we are creating a more inclusive working environment, improving our business performance and building a more sustainable, fair and inclusive world in which we are finally taking advantage of the talent and knowledge that can be contributed by 50% of the population that until recently was excluded", says Antonio Calvo Roy, Manager of the Sustainability area of the Red Eléctrica Group.
Peter T. Grauer, Chairman of Bloomberg, points out that "the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index recognises companies that are maintaining a strong focus on providing an inclusive working environment that supports the changing needs of employees and preserves the competitive strengths gained through gender diversity, which is increasingly critical in this challenging business environment".
The challenges that gender equality poses for Red Eléctrica
Two of the Group's current objectives in terms of gender equality are noteworthy: to grow from the current 34.8% of female managers to 50% by 2030 and to increase the presence of women in highly male-dominated technical positions.
To achieve the first, this year we have launched the Diversity Management and Women's Leadership programme, through which we offer awareness-raising and support training actions that allow us to address diversity from different perspectives in order to promote equality and boost the development of female talent in the organisation.
Since 2018, we have also had a Comprehensive Diversity Plan with different courses of action: promoting women's access to positions of responsibility, equal pay for men and women, work-life balance, prevention of moral, sexual and gender-based harassment and prevention of gender-based violence and other aspects of diversity such as age, disability and the LGTBI group.
With regard to the second objective, the recruitment of female talent in sectors that have historically been male dominated, such as energy and telecommunications, the Red Eléctrica Group is taking steps geared toward the inclusion of positive actions in favour of hiring women when looking for these profiles. In addition, we are supporting all types of initiatives that encourage the incorporation of younger women into scientific and technological careers, such as the STEAM Alliance for Female Talent, Girls on the Science Stand, promoted by the Ministry of Education; an alliance we have recently joined.
