The PERFILA project is a project spearheaded by Red Eléctrica, which aims to improve the current profiling service, based on a panel of consumers who have smart meters.

Course of action:

Currently, more than half of the energy consumed in our country cannot be measured hourly. Neither households nor an important part of small businesses and services have smart meters and, therefore, no hourly metering. However, in the electricity market, all energy is negotiated and settled on an hourly basis. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the behaviour of the hourly demand for this important part of consumption.

The formation of the panel of consumers will be carried out taking advantage of the gradual replacement of the currently installed meters, foreseen under the National Meter Replacement Plan, and under the consensus of a joint working group with electricity distribution companies.

This project represents the first use of smart meters equipped with telemetry and telemanagementcapability to improve the operation of the electricity system.

Period:

The project was completed in 2015.

Collaborators:

Red Eléctrica is spearheading this project which involves the participation of the major electricity distribution companies in Spain: Endesa, Iberdrola, Unión Fenosa Distribución, E.ON, EDP Hidrocantábrico Energía,ASEME, together with the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

Benefits to the electricity system:

Consumption profiles are used by trading companies to buy their energy in the market and by the distribution companies to estimate hourly metering. Greater accuracy in these profiles results in an optimisation of the management of the system and therefore greater efficiency in the electricity system.

As for system operation, this will move towards a reduced need for the use of system adjustment services due to a more realistic closing of the final energy schedules and less hourly imbalances. At the same time, it creates a better understanding of the hourly consumption of households and an important part of small businesses and services.
