Red Eléctrica commences a more in-depth geotechnical survey for the Soria-Chira pumped-storage hydroelectric power station

Red Eléctrica will undertake a more in-depth geotechnical and geological study of the surveying work carried out in 2012 in order to continue advancing in the Soria-Chira pumped-storage hydroelectric power station project.

The deadline for completion of the campaign is nine months and has a budget of 1.5 million euros set aside. The scope of the study partially covers the municipal districts of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán.

Surveying works will begin on 20 November and will have the wide-scale involvement of specialised companies located in Gran Canaria. The campaign will consist mainly of exploratory drilling and excavations, of different depths, in order to have an in-depth knowledge of the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the terrain. The existing geological survey study will be complemented with this information.

On the other hand, specific tests will also be carried out to optimise the design of the caverns where the power station and the substation are to be housed. Regarding the desalination plant on the Arguineguín coast, a seawater pumping test will be carried out to study the permeability of the land.

The Soria-Chira pumped-storage hydroelectric power station is an essential infrastructure to advance towards the achievement of the new energy model on the Canary Islands, based on renewable energies, interconnections between islands, large-scale energy storage and a better and greater meshing of the electricity grid. With an investment of more than 320 million euros, it will be an effective tool for the electricity system operator to improve security of supply, as well as the safe and improved integration of renewable energies in Gran Canaria.

Red Eléctrica is a global leader in sustainability, which guarantees respect for the environment in all its projects and permanent dialogue with its stakeholders.
