Red Eléctrica will compete in the 36th edition of the Copa del Rey de Vela in the Swan 42 class
  • The Red Eléctrica de España yacht won the X-35 class in last year’s edition

Red Eléctrica de España will take part, for the eighth consecutive year, in the ‘Copa del Rey de Vela’ (King’s Cup sailing competition) through the sponsorship of the sailing yacht that bears its name and that will compete in the Swan 42 class for the first time in this sporting event. This 36th edition will be held from 29 July to 5 August in the waters of the Bay of Palma.

The participation of the Red Eléctrica de España in the Swan 42 class, that will consist of one-design sailing yachts racing in a real-time competition, opens a new challenge and new demands for the crew, especially after the triumphs obtained within the X-35 class in the two previous editions, and after obtaining, in 2016, the trophy awarded to the absolute winner and for the best one-design competitor of the four classes that were disputed in real time. The Red Eléctrica de España single-hull sailing yacht will again have a crew led by Javier Sanz, President of the Royal Sailing Club (RCN) of Palma and President of the Organising Committee of the Copa del Rey.

As in the two previous editions, Red Eléctrica will sponsor the 'Enlace' Trophies, which are given to the top finishers in each category who, at the midpoint of the competition, are leading the competition standings in their class. The name of the trophies refers to the submarine electricity interconnection projects between islands carried out by the Company in the Balearic Islands; links that are essential for guaranteeing electricity supply in the Balearic Islands and for integrating renewable energies into the electricity system under safe conditions.

The consolidation of the sponsorship and participation of Red Eléctrica in the ‘Copa del Rey’ sailing competition reinforces the Company’s social commitment to the Balearic Islands and its support for this sporting event. The ‘Copa del Rey’ is one of the most important sailing competitions in Spain and Europe which, in turn, is one of the most important social events held in the Balearic Islands.
